The old trick of cracking a high pressure fuel union to bleed air is both pointless and risky on these high pressure (22,000psi) common rail engines. The high pressure side of the pump is self bleeding due to the return pipes from each injector and the pump. The problem is getting fuel up to the pump in the first place.
